Terms of Use

For The Record is a municipal political-accountability research platform providing recorded councillor votes, fiscal information drawn from municipal documents, councillor responses, and AI-assisted features. The Service is designed for informational, educational, and research purposes.

By using the Service, you represent that you are at least the age of majority in your jurisdiction. Access to certain features of the Service may require a valid subscription or an authorized access code provided by a sponsoring partner. Use of the Service is limited to personal, non-commercial, or internal research purposes. You may not share your access credentials or codes with unauthorized third parties.

For The Record is a premium product (regularly $10/month or $90/year). Access is currently provided free of charge to end users through various sponsorship arrangements. We may, in the future, end specific sponsorships or charge for access; we will not begin charging you without clear, advance notice and an opportunity for you to stop using the Service. No refunds are offered as no fees are currently charged to end users.

• Public Records: Votes, positions, and fiscal figures are derived from official municipal records and presented for accountability and research. We do not author these facts. Attribution may be limited where the source record does not provide individual vote counts.
• AI-Assisted Content: Scoped chat and summary features are AI-generated interpretations, not definitive statements of fact. They may contain errors or misinterpret context. They are provided "as-is" and "as-available."
• No Warranty: PolicyShift does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any record or AI-generated response. You are encouraged to verify all information against official municipal Hansard or primary source records.

The Service may feature responses submitted directly by elected officials or their authorized offices.

• Submission: Only the identified councillor or their authorized representative may submit a response via the provided secure link.
• Responsibility: Responses are the sole responsibility of the submitting party. PolicyShift does not endorse or verify the content of these responses.
• License: By submitting a response, the councillor grants PolicyShift a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual license to publish, display, and archive the response as part of the Service.
• Moderation: PolicyShift reserves the right to remove or refuse to publish any response that is defamatory, unlawful, or violates these Terms.

• Ownership: All content on the Service—including but not limited to the selection, arrangement, and categorization of data, fiscal extractions, data visualizations, and proprietary summaries—is the intellectual property of PolicyShift.ca Inc.
• Limited License: You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access the content for personal or internal research. You may cite, share, or screenshot excerpts for educational or journalistic purposes provided you provide clear attribution to "For The Record / PolicyShift.ca."
• Restrictions: You may not systematically harvest, scrape, or mirror the database, nor may you use our data for commercial resale without express written permission from PolicyShift.ca Inc.

You agree not to:

• Use any automated system (including bots, scrapers, or crawlers) to access or harvest data from the Service.
• Attempt to circumvent any access controls or security measures.
• Use the Service to distribute abusive, illegal, or defamatory content.
• Reverse engineer or attempt to extract the source code of the Service.

For The Record is a neutral information-tracking service. It does not provide political advice, voting recommendations, or legal counsel. The presentation of data does not constitute an endorsement or critique of any politician or policy.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, PolicyShift shall not be liable for any damages arising out of your use of the Service. In any event, our total liability to you for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the amount you paid to us in the 12 months prior to the claim (currently $0).

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless PolicyShift.ca Inc. from any claims, damages, or expenses (including legal fees) arising from your breach of these Terms or your misuse of the Service.

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta, Canada. Any disputes will be handled in the courts located in Edmonton, Alberta.

We may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes in our Service or legal obligations. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated Terms on this page. Your continued use of the Service following such changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.
